Approaching Shamanic Healing; A Respectful Thought
One of the things that is important to me is acknowledging the history of the culture in any element of practice that I am taking. This is where identity work begins for me, as I am not here to copy a sacred practice from a culture that found its way to me due to colonisation. The very reason I was searching was to find my way back to my own roots and to enhance my own intuition as a human. I did not know that was what I needed; however, the spirit of my soul did, and my body responded.
I was already deeply aware of the suffering created by colonisation, and I truly admire the efforts made by Indigenous people to sustain their practices and ways. It is deeply humbling for me. It gives me more insight into my own culture, and I am glad I paused for a number of years to question my own values and identity. I needed the time to truly understand what the conflict I held inside of me was. I had to take the time here.
To quote the anthropologist Margaret Mead, “The traveller who has once been from home is wiser than he who has never left his doorstep, so a knowledge of one other culture should enable us to see our own more objectively.” — Showing how stepping outside our cultural norms clarifies who we are.
Any healing journey tends to require change of some kind, and I am deeply aware that this can be a daunting process. It takes an immense amount of bravery to embark on this journey. There does not need to be such a rush or pressure, as it can take time to learn how the changes unfold and sit within our lives. Having gone through eight years of training in therapy, and numerous spiritual journeys, coming home to myself was a process of turning suffering into meaning. It meant learning to become objective about the things that I see happening around me and also learning what it is that I need to embody.
In my training as a person-centred therapist, I was already developing myself through the practice, as it means I have to stay with my clients and their process. Indigenous people inspired me with their ultimate trust in intuition, and in the trust that marrying up mind, body and spirit allows for true medicine that impacts not only the individual but also the community. Many cultures in the East hold similar concepts, and it contributes to a true harmony and balance with yourself and the world around you.
